“My experience as a black trans women completely differs from that of my white counterparts because of access and systematic racism," says Mojo. It's true, In the recent years more than 50 transgenders were killed, most of them being people of color. In just November of last year alone, 26 gender non-conforming minorities were murdered. “Black Trans Women are murdered for our existence”.
If this isn't shameful enough, many transgenders, especially from low end communities are denied the accessibility and resources for health insurance coverage for transitional care. The stigma centered around healthcare as well the overall discrimination becomes so bad that it unfortunately leads to injection of illegal hormones. This places the biggest gamble on people's lives. "When you do it that way it's kind of tricky because you have no medical files or records to monitor your progress," says Mojo Disco. Although these recipients ay reach their aesthetic goals, their health is heavily compromised and this can resort in a fatal death, which most of the time it does.
Choices like this are based on poverty, access, and the classist system that is in work to marginalize groups of people.
MOJO DISCO hopes with her persistent organization and team of devotes transgender activists she can create more opportunities non conforming people of color in her community.
